How to keep Aquarium Plants alive?
I just had a plant in a small aquarium and died. I get another, but I am afraid it will also die. What should you do to keep the plant alive?
Here are some practical suggestions for success with aquarium plants: Choose the right plants. Aquatic Plants do not have the same requirements for their survival. Some of lighting, temperature, the harsh pH conditions and to allow some plants to survive and thrive while others perish. If you're not ready for match your aquarium conditions to those required by a demanding kind, stick to varieties that fit well in your conditions. Plants that normally does lighting particularly well in Milwaukee and the Water Level and temperature are Swordplants Amazon, most of Vallisneria, some Cryptocorynes, banana, Apongetons, Hygrophila, Water Wisteria, Anacharis (Elodea) and Hornwort. Plant carefully. Aquatic plants are much more fragile than their terrestrial cousins. Rough handling can damage the leaves, stems and roots. Plant them two to four inches of fine gravel or half the aquarium. Deeply rooted plants such as swords and Vallisneria should be planted so that their "crowns" (where the tip of roots and leaves begin) are visible just above the surface of the earth. Anacharis stem plants like Hygrophila and should simply one or two inches of the stem gently pushed into the gravel. All rubber bands, weights made of lead or plastic pots are designed to be temporary and are best removed if the plants have sufficient roots to hold it in place. Give them plenty of light. The highest resistant plants would survive in 10 to 12 hours of light per day of fluorescent light that comes standard with your tank (less than 1 watt / gallon). Many other species may need two, three or more long fluorescent bulbs for normal growth. (Y No, you can not just leave the light longer in the plants need brightness, instead of hours.) plants special bulbs are a good investment, especially if you can not get a lot of bulbs in the tank as you want. The bulbs frequently (every 8 to 12 months) for best results, such as fluorescent lamps lose much of their intensity and spectrum of age. Finally, keep the light reflector and the cover of tank cleaning and light as possible is gaining ground in the aquarium. "Feed" them ". As plants grow, they absorb nutrients from chemicals, including several water and the gravel bed. Some of these chemicals, for example, nitrogen and phosphorus are generally abundant in fish waste and should not be added separately. Others, especially iron and potassium, it is necessary to regularly review the ponds with many plants that grow well. If you create a new reservoir, particularly for plants the addition of lateritic clay in the lower layer of gravel is strongly recommended as a source of slow release iron. In addition, liquid and / or plant nutrients should be added in the form of granules routine. In densely planted, well lit aquarium, adding a generator of carbon dioxide (commercial or DIY model), it is worth considering. Beware of toxic chemicals. Even many of our common neutralizing chlorine, water conditioners and aquarium salts adversely certain plants, especially if they are dumped on the right in a concentrated form in the leaves of the plant. More dangerous are many medicines for fish. "Ich" Treatment of malachite green and some antibiotics seems fairly safe, but others may turn into a plant overnight. It's better than the fish move patients to another tank treatment instead of treating a planted tank. Avoid fish vegetarian. Some fish, notably the silver dollar, Buenos Aires tetras, Severum foil barbs and devour most plants with roots in no time. Others, like most larger cichlids keep the plants are uprooted and destroyed. Bristlenose Plecostomus leave the finer-leaved plants alone, but to kill the broad leaves of plants of the sword in particular. Many of the fish communities in common, such as small fish, catfish, swordtail and the tiger can also browse from time to time in plants, but seem to do little damage. Supplementing their diet with plant food of good will to meet their needs. Change water often. Plants, like many fish, they often prefer (once a week) but small changes (20% or less) of water. As with any change in water make sure the new dechlorinated water and a temperature similar to that of the aquarium. Watch Out for the algae. Some algal growth is normal in any aquarium, especially with extra lighting. This natural number can be controlled with the addition of a seaweed-eating Fish some Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eaters, stone or Plecostomus Lappers determined. The rapid growth of algae, however, is a warning that something is wrong. Overfeeding fish is the most common cause of algal blooms, followed by inadequate water changing, too light yellow, and plant fertilizer quality poor.
