When parts of a ship from the terminology (port, ie, bow, stern, etc.)?

I read a book about an expedition Arctic convicted in the 1840s and I was just wondering where the terms of the anatomy of a vessel on the left, right, rear, front and others for the first time? Why is it right instead of starboard and stern instead of the back and so on?
