Sunsun Fine

aquarium Filtration Question?

Hi, I have a 55 Gal Tank home to a 6 inches Oscar. Its Filtration is a Sunsun Canister Filter, and a small Hang On Back Filter. Both filters are running fine for 8 months now without problem.
I am planning to remove the hang on back, and by research, the Canister Filter’s GPH is 165…Will it be enough for my 55 gal tank?

I don’t want to be replacing HOB cartridge anymore. So I think the Canister filter would be enough.

Thanks.

Why not leave the HOB, and use plain filter floss cut to size instead of carbon cartridges? Many advanced aquarists do not use carbon, and there’s actually a good argument against it. Simple weekly water changes with gravel vacuuming are enough to keep your aquarium in balance, and with plain filter floss, all you have to do is occasionally rinse it in old Aquarium Water–it need not be replaced. Your oscar will need weekly changes anyway, as these are very dirty fish.

While you could remove the HOB, I’d recommend seeding your tank with a bacterial supplement after you remove it, since a good amount of beneficial bacteria will be leaving along with that filter.
